In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, promising “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his tenure.

A Historic Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
