Tutoring a Toddler to Develop into an 'British Gentleman' – Does It Justify the Money?

Child education concept
The firm behind the advert claims that what appears like "extravagance or oddity" is truly "deliberate investment in initial instruction".

"Parents located in north London wants to find an remarkable and experienced tutor to guide their smallest child on his first steps to growing into an British gentleman."

When reading this listing, you might easily skip the term "beginning" as mere a turn of phrase.

However, it could be the most important aspect of this unique position posting, as it aims to find a teacher for a 12-month-old.

Hundreds of responses have already been received since the unidentified family advertised their call for the highly paid tutor, who has to be "a uniquely qualified person".

In recent few weeks, the post has received attention throughout the press, with many wondering why?

Forward-Thinking Method

Adam Caller, head and founder of a global tutoring firm, which is assisting the family in their hunt, stated that in spite of first scepticism, he viewed the concept "forward-looking", and "progressive".

When he met the family, he said they appreciated the atypical character of their request, and how immature their son is.

But, they explained that they "were unwilling to delay any longer" to get a tutor, as they had postponed until their elder sibling was five, and by that age "cultural influence had already set in".

What precisely does the family indicate by "cultural leaning"?

It's "comprehensive", Adam replied. "The manner you eat, the way you speak".

He stated the elder child had picked up "extremely delicate, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had taken on their cultural ways. The family explained to the consultant they wished to avoid the same situation to recur with their new baby.

The strategy: To engage a English tutor, who needs to speak with standard English accent, to shape the baby from day one.

Tutoring discussion
Tutors International claim the advert has initiated a larger discussion about how households regard learning, advantage and the function of home and culture in development.

Natural Absorption

"Much of the learning at the start here is somewhat osmotic," said Adam.

It's via this natural absorption that the family are expecting the child will acquire the UK customs they want to impart.

Adam said the tutor needed to be somebody who studied at "the appropriate educational institutions – comparable categories of schools as the family aspire to send their son to".

"The tutor must be the suitable individual, they'll be doing things they may not realize they're doing, just naturally," he commented.

Expense Not a Factor

The family told Adam the successful candidate should preferably also have understanding of or passion in horse riding, alpine skiing, the arts and musical activities so as to inspire the child in a broad spectrum of hobbies.

Additionally though, he explained the family desired the tutor to sign up the child on a variety of courses so the child would be "horseback riding and picking up an tool by the time they are around three years old".

In the family's perspective, guiding their son grow into a "British gentleman" will bring about achievement and create opportunities.

"Considering the advantages and disadvantages of that, because it's undoubtedly a social class indicator," he comments.

However, in spite of all this guidance in "UK identity", could the child absorb alleged cultural bias from the globally influenced family he is raised by anyway?

"Absolutely", answered he. "The family know this might not succeed, but they've merely embraced the perspective of, 'let's give it a go and let's go as quickly as we can', because the cost of it is not a concern," he stated.

Impractical

Several in the tutoring industry who have these concerns.

Another CEO, head and founder of an educational organization, who provides private tutors, stated that "the journey of embracing two identities, or actually, forming one's identity, is something that must be lived into, not engineered."

The expert wrote that he had relocated from China to the UK at the time of childhood, and had been educated knowing and living two backgrounds. He continued to be educated at Cambridge University.

The educator was the first individual hailing from mainland China to be chosen to the role of Finance Head of the university debating society.

"The idea that an individual can act as a representation of UK identity, an individual who can possibly impart the attributes of a English gentleman onto a 12-month-old child, appears naive and unrealistic," he stated.

"From my perspective, employing a quintessentially English tutor from infancy will does not automatically produce the result they desire.

"I wasn't provided with that kind of mentor, and however I have been privileged enough to enjoy numerous of the experiences they hope for their son."

He continued: "The fact is, personal identity should not be forced from the outside; it must be selected, and it must come from within."

Acquiring Englishness

Naturally, English culture is something Adam hopes can be educated – and marketed.

"I think the fact that the global community views us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
